AquiPor Technologies
THE BRIEF
AquiPor is a material technology company that has built a revolutionary new concrete like pavement that filters stormwater where it falls and keeps the pollution from draining into our rivers and lakes. What began as a passion project for two entrepreneurs has become a full fledged company on their first large scale equity crowd fund. Houdini created their brand, developed their website and built the marketing and communications strategy – allowing us to bring beautiful visuals and message clarity to an up and coming business. We also worked with a talented production studio, Factory Town, to create engaging video content.

Hutton Settlement
THE BRIEF
Hutton Settlement is a children’s home founded in 1919. It provides a safe and caring long term living facility for children 5-18. Hutton needed a new website that focused on its core themes, needs and values to better express to the community the work they do and create simple ways for people who need help to reach out and receive it. Houdini collaborated with Hutton to identify these core themes and design a page that visually speaks these values, integrating imagery from the settlement and pairing it with concise information and calls to action.

What’s in the Box Experience
THE BRIEF
An immersive visual and auditory experience in a large half cube on stilts. Within the box, a themed projection mapping show was displayed that reacted to a custom DJ set. Underneath the cube, step stools were placed for two attendees to step up, put on personal headphones and then insert their heads into holes in the bottom of the cube.
In collaboration with our friends at Vexing Media.

THE EVENT

Unifest 2019 LED Dome Experience
THE BRIEF
In the Unifest LED Dome, we created an LED Light Show Geo Dome experience that reacted in real time to the beat of the DJ music. The experience consisted of 5 concentric rings of LED strips that hung from the top of the Dome.
THE CHALLENGE
What dynamic light installation for Unifest (a local music and arts festival) could be built for just $500.00 in materials, and installed in less than 2 weeks?
LINKS
THE IDEAS
As Unifest is mostly based on music, we wanted to create an experience for attendees that either reacted to their motions or was part of the music. Some of the initial ideas included:
• LED rods with depth sensors in the bottoms to sense when people were beneath them and the height of the person would dictate how much of the LED rod would light up
• Kinetic dance floor that would change colors based on when they were stepped on, and could actually generate their lighting from the motion of interaction
• Floating clouds that would light up with the music based on different frequencies

THE SETUP
The rods that were used were PEX piping that can be purchased at Home Depot – a full 100 ft roll was purchased on Amazon for cost savings. The LED rope was also purchased on Amazon (White and Blue), as well as the switches. A Raspberry Pi was used as the CPU, and then the wiring was simple speaker wire purchased on Amazon.
• The PEX was cut into 2′ and 3′ lengths. We wanted to give the rings some dynamism on top of the lighting, just for visual contrast and interest.
• The LED rope was fed down the PEX pipes after the ends were soldered.
• The project was developed in Python.
• A simple structure was built to mount all the switches, controller and additional hardware to.
THE RESULT
The result was a light installation that was 100% reactive to the music coming from a DJ’s in real time, and was even hooked up to a microphone for getting just a little extra. Attendees were able to have a new experience literally every second they were dancing.
THE FINAL IDEA
How do you narrow down such fun ideas?! Given the complexity of the kinetic dance floor (and the costs), that idea was removed – well, pushed to future creation for the right project and client. For the depth sensors, this would also push us over our budget, and would take a lot longer to develop and QA, so we saved this for future as well. The clouds idea was fun with the music driving the experience, but the clouds were going to take some research on how to make them the best they could be.
The final result was a combination of the LED rods and the cloud idea. After reviewing YouTube for inspiration, a video of paint on top of speakers was found, as well as sand on top of a speaker that reacted to the audio differently based on the frequency that was played. This concept sparked the idea of arranging the rods into concentric rings at the top of the geo-dome, with the rods hanging down.

Mount St. Helens Exhibit
THE BRIEF
2020 is the 40th anniversary of the eruption of Mount St Helens. It was the most destructive volcanic eruption in our nation’s recorded history and remains one of the most universal memories among Pacific Northwesterners. It was also the first eruption of its kind to be extensively photographed and videotaped, creating a wealth of visible and audible records.
The Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture approached Houdini with the opportunity to create the branding and overall look and feel for the exhibit, as well as an interactive installation. Since the eruption was within the last half century, there exists a large populace available to recount their experience and share it with a willing audience. In order to capture these accounts, Houdini created a website that allowed users to write their stories, upload images or upload videos. These submissions were then collected in a database for future reference and viewing in the exhibit.
Visitors at the Mount St Helens exhibit are able to approach the iPad connected to the database of accounts and scroll through a gallery of submissions. On the wall in front of the iPad is a projection of Mount St Helens with smoke billowing out, ash falling and sticky notes flying around the smoke and mountain. Upon selection of the desired account from the gallery on the iPad, one of the sticky notes flies into view and takes over the main screen. Videos will play for everyone to see, with a sound cone directing the audio to minimize any intrusiveness.
